- Walls That Speak: JEDARIART Brings Qatar’s Artistic Spirit to Chile and Argentina
In a year defined by creativity without borders, Years of Culture and Qatar Museums’ Public Art Department have taken JEDARIART, Qatar’s beloved public art programme, on a new journey across Latin America. This November, the project arrived in Chile and Argentina, transforming public spaces into open-air galleries that celebrate friendship, hospitality, and the universal language of art. Launched in 2020 under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, JEDARIART has reimagined how communities connect with art, bringing murals and installations into everyday life. Walls of Valdivia Come Alive Qatari artists Aisha Al Fadhala and Mubarak Al Malik joined forces with Chilean collaborators through a partnership with Edgar Endress, Professor at George Mason University, and a member of the Institute for Public Art (IPA). Together, they painted large-scale murals on the Municipality Building of Valdivia and the Architecture Department at Universidad Austral de Chile, filling its walls with symbols of Chilean nature and Qatari tradition. Al Malik’s mural, Love and Hospitality , captured the heart of this collaboration. Known for his use of the battoollah, the traditional face mask worn by Qatari matriarchs, Al Malik combined Qatari motifs such as the mabkhara (incense burner) with Chilean wildlife, featuring the strong-voiced and elusive chucao bird. He incorporated textile patterns worn by Qatari women alongside the copihue flower, uniting Valdivia’s natural colours with Qatari designs to create an easy fusion of both cultures. Aisha Al-Fadhala, known artistically as ALFA, worked with the University to develop a piece that reflects the culture and beauty of Valdivia. Often described as the gateway to Chilean Patagonia, Valdivia is surrounded by dramatic landscapes and stunning natural scenery, elements that deeply influenced her mural A Sip of Cultures. Inspired by the region’s mountains, sunsets, and intense colour palette, ALFA placed the traditional Qatari ghawa cup at the heart of the composition, encircled by Valdivia’s natural motifs. Henna-inspired patterns, shaped by her research into textiles from the Los Ríos region, appeared across the design, merging Qatari and Chilean aesthetics. Additional elements included the dandurria bird soaring across the backdrop and delicate chilco flowers draping from the corners. Buenos Aires Walls Welcome New Voices A few days later, JEDARIART moved eastward to Buenos Aires, where two Qatari artists, Abdulla Alemadi and Abdulla Al Sallat, worked in an up-and-coming neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Alemadi’s mural visualised the meeting of cultures at the centre of this exchange: beneath the shade of a date palm, Argentina’s Sun of May, its national emblem, is draped in a Qatari bisht , sharing coffee and mate , the beloved herbal drink of Latin America, with the rufous hornero , Argentina’s national bird. An empty chair was originally placed in the scene to invite viewers to join, symbolising welcome, generosity, and cultural connection. The mural then evolved into a true collaboration when Argentinian artist Lucho Montolivo, known as Olivo, joined the project. Olivo’s contribution featured his signature character, a traveling boy. By incorporating this character, Olivo added a sense of wander and shared storytelling to the mural. His fellow artist, Al Sallat, took a more introspective approach. His mural, titled for the roses is a deeply personal piece inspired by the Andalusian philosopher Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi. “It suggests that meaning lies not on the surface, but in what can be felt or understood by those who truly seek. Just as poetry reveals itself differently to every reader, this mural offers each viewer the chance to discover their own version of its story,” Al Sallat said. A Dialogue in Colour “JEDARIART has always been about creating conversations through art,” said Dimitrije Bugarski, Public Art Planning Specialist at Qatar Museums. “Through the Years of Culture initiative, we’re taking that dialogue beyond Qatar, allowing artists to immerse themselves in new environments and exchange ideas with local communities. These murals in Argentina and Chile are stories told through colour and form. They also help us deepen cultural and diplomatic ties, strengthening long-term relationships built through Years of Culture. We hope this creative exchange inspires further research, collaboration, and new opportunities for artists in the future.” Since its inception, JEDARIART has redefined how art interacts with public life in Qatar, adorning schools, streets, and cityscapes. By extending this creative vision to Latin America, the project reinforces a key tenet of Qatar’s cultural diplomacy: that the most powerful connections are made through shared experiences. #Qatar #Chile
- Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Attends Expert Workshop Introducing the WISE Education Index
Objective is to develop a framework to redefine how global education systems are measured, and identify how they can improve, innovate, and enable people to flourish Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, attended an Expert Consultation Workshop, introducing the WISE Education Index – a framework designed to rethink how the effectiveness of the world’s education systems is assessed – at the WISE 12 Summit. The Index, developed by Qatar Foundation’s global education initiative WISE, was presented at WISE 12, the latest edition of WISE’s global biennial summit, where leading researchers, economists, and policymakers convened to review and discuss the framework ahead of its pilot phase. The workshop was attended by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, and saw the participation of Her Excellency Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater, Minister of Education and Higher Education. The Index addresses a critical gap: while education systems across the world are adapting to rapidly shifting demographics, technological change, and economic transformation, the many current global indicators that measure access, literacy, employability, and national performance fail to capture the full continuum of education – from the conditions that shape early learning to long-term processes that influence wellbeing, workforce readiness, and lifelong learning. Unlike traditional approaches that center on static outcomes often correlated with national wealth, the WISE Education Index seeks to recognize that education systems do not begin from the same starting point. The Index will aim to offer a holistic and process-oriented, rather than input-driven, framework that helps explain not only what education systems achieve, but how they improve over time. “The WISE Index has the potential to become a powerful tool for policymakers, so long as it stays aligned with national priorities, remains clear and practical, and reflects the true purpose of education,” said Nofe Al Suwaidi, Secretary General of the National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, speaking at the high-level consultation workshop. “If designed thoughtfully, it can help us monitor where we stand, where we must go, and how to build systems that nurture learning, equity, and human values.” By centering its analysis on systemic processes and improvement pathways, the Index aims to challenge the long-standing “data-rich but information-poor” reality of global education measurement and support more equitable, evidence-driven approaches to education reform. Reflecting Qatar Foundation’s commitment to advancing education on a national, regional, and global level, the Index aims to support governments and education leaders as they design policies that champion social-cultural integration, innovation readiness, equity and human flourishing. Its multidimensional structure examines systems through the interconnected lenses of inputs, processes, and outcomes, enabling decision-makers to identify the conditions that exist, how resources are used, and which practices down to the classroom level generate the greatest impact. The Index introduces a new lens for a new era, one that measures education systems not by narrow outputs, but by the full continuum that enables human flourishing. This Index aims to redefine global understanding of what effective, equitable, and future-ready education truly looks like.” said Selma Talha-Jebril, Director of Policy and Research at WISE. A global Request for Proposals led to the selection of SUMMA, an education research and innovation lab, as WISE’s research and statistical partner following a rigorous scoring and review process by seven international experts, including representatives from Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The roundtable brought together global experts to refine the Index’s framework. Their insights will inform a 2026–27 pilot study, during which WISE and SUMMA will collect primary and secondary data across a diverse group of countries. This will test the Index’s domains, dimensions, and indicators and will form the foundation for the inaugural publication of the WISE Education Index publication in late 2027. #SheikhaMozabintNasser

- Msheireb Museums Shares Decade of Heritage Innovation at ICOM Dubai 2025
Msheireb Museums participated in the ICOM (International Council of Museums) Dubai 2025 Conference from 12 to 17 November at Dubai World Trade Centre, sharing insights from a decade of transforming heritage into living inspiration. The participation follows the recent 10th anniversary celebrations and enabled Msheireb Museums to present the practical methodologies documented in its recently launched publications to museum professionals and cultural heritage experts from across the globe. The conference provided a platform to demonstrate how the lessons captured in 'Msheireb Museums: Transforming Doha's Heritage Houses' and 'Building on Tradition – The New Architectural Language of Qatar' translate into approaches for heritage-led museum practice and regional museum branding. Mr Abdulla Al Naama, General Manager, Msheireb Museums, said: "The conversations at ICOM Dubai reinforced what we celebrated at our 10th anniversary: that heritage and progress work as partners when grounded in community wisdom. Sharing our approach with peers globally validated our work in making these four houses living platforms where heritage actively shapes identity and inspires belonging. This dialogue strengthens our commitment to being houses that continue to inspire." Presentations at Global Forum In Session A-22 (Intangible Heritage – Storytelling, Identity, and Relevance), Mr Abdulla Al Naama presented "Voices Remembered: Curating Intangible Heritage and Historical Trauma at Bin Jelmood House." The presentation explored how Bin Jelmood House addresses sensitive historical narratives whilst honouring the voices and experiences of those affected. In Session C-22 (Regional Museum Branding / The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities), Mr Mohammed Al Yousuf, Operation and visitor relations manager, presented "Branding Heritage: How Msheireb Museums Connect Local Identity with Global Conversations." The session demonstrated how the museums position themselves as a bridge between Qatar's cultural heritage and contemporary global museum practices within the context of rapid urban transformation. Discussions following both sessions focused on how the museums balance authenticity with innovation, and how they transform historic buildings into spaces where Qatar's stories continue to inspire education, dialogue and community belonging. The ICOM Dubai 2025 Conference brought together museum professionals, curators, researchers and cultural heritage experts to address the evolving role of museums in contemporary society. The participation demonstrates how Msheireb Museums contributes to regional and international discourse on heritage-led innovation as part of Msheireb Downtown Doha's integrated approach to connecting tradition with sustainable urban development. Msheireb Museums tell the story of four remarkable historic buildings in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha. Born from the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, these heritage houses have been converted into world-class museums adapted with great sensitivity in accordance with international conservation standards. Over the past decade, the museums have enriched the educational journey of more than 200,000 students through strategic partnerships with academic and cultural institutions, establishing themselves as a vital platform for dialogue between heritage and contemporary urban development. -ENDS- About Msheireb Properties Msheireb Properties is Qatar's leading sustainable real estate developer, backed by Qatar Foundation and Qatar Investment Authority.
